STANFORD
cardinal (41-24, 14-10)
final 2008 ranking: 4
Stanford played well in Omaha,
defeating Florida State and Miami, but lost twice to Georgia
to have their season ended with a third place finish at
the College World Series. Their biggest bats, including
first round draftee Jason Castro, are no longer on campus,
and the pitching staff took some major hits as well with
the notable loss of leader Erik Davis, making a return
trip to the CWS an uphill battle. However Stanford’s
reemergence last season was a true team effort with contributions
made up and down the roster. As such, it would be premature
to dismiss a return trip to Omaha. Stanford’s best
bet to get back to Rosenblatt will be to ride the coat
tails of pitching prospects Jeffrey Inman (7-2, 4.27)
and sophomore Alex Pracher (1-1, 7.42), and emerging ace
Drew Storen (4-3, 2.79, 8 SVs). Offensively someone needs
to step up if the Cardinal are going to be contenders.
If Brent Milleville (.289, 11, 57) or Toby Gerhart (.240,
7, 21) can drive in runs, it would go along way into keeping
the Cardinal in the mix.
