OKLAHOMA STATE cowboys
(44-18, 18-9)
final 2008 ranking: 17

Oklahoma State had a wave of wins late in the season to charge into the top ten. Yet the Cowboys’ title aspirations were doused by a pair of losses to Wichita State in which the team’s ace, Andrew Oliver (7-2, 2.20), was prematurely ruled ineligible by the NCAA. The talented tandem of Oliver and Tyler Lyons (12-2, 3.31) returns to Stillwater and should keep the Cowboys competitive in the Big 12 title race and make them a contender to return to Omaha for the 20th time in school history. Whether or not they return to Rosenblatt will depend on if Coach Frank Anderson will have someone step up to drive in the sweet swinging Thomas Belza (.386, 2, 34), the Big 12’s leading hitter last season. Despite some big pluses coming into the season, all conference players at first base, shortstop and catcher won’t be back on campus.
