MIAMI
hurricanes
(53-11, 23-5)
final 2008 ranking: #5 |
The Hurricanes came into
the 2008 CWS as the number one national seed with a
team chock full of major league
prospects. However the ‘Canes 23rd trip to Omaha
was ended prematurely as the “U” lost to
Stanford, rebounded to beat Florida State, but were
then rudely eliminated by Georgia. The bulk of Miami’s
offense has graduated to the professional ranks, but
enough power still remains, led by shortstop, Ryan Jackson
(.360, 4, 50) to outscore opponents. Chris Hernandez
(11-0, 2.72, 117 K) dazzled as a freshman and Eric Erickson
(9-1, 4.15) continued to accumulate wins and accolades
his second year for Miami. However Erickson went down
with a season ending arm injury in January which will
require either David Gutierrez (5-0, 4.75) or JC transfer
Taylor Wulf to step up big time for the 'Canes to compete
nationally. With Kyle Bellamy (6-0, 1.86) taking over
the closer role, ‘Cane games might as well be
over in the eighth inning.
