COASTAL CAROLINA
chanticleers
(50-14, 17-3)
final 2008 ranking: #16 |

Two losses to North Carolina ended Coastal's magical
2008 season which saw the Chant's play in their first-ever
Super Regional in program history. However repeating
last season’s success will not be easy. CCU will
be without the brawny bats (and gloves) of Johnny Bench
Award Finalist Dock Doyle, Tommy Baldridge and David
Sappelt as well as pitcher Joey Haug. Yet even with
the mass exodus out of Conway, the cupboard is far from
bare for Head Coach Gary Gilmore. Scott Woodward (.354,
7, 45, 42 SBs) put up some of the best freshman numbers
in the county last season and further honed his skills
over the summer playing for Team USA. First baseman
David Anderson (.333, 20, 59) quietly put up top shelf
power numbers and starter Nick McCully (10-3, 3.53)
looks to be the ace the team needs to win another Big
South title. The Chanticleers may not have the talent
they possessed last season, but they’ll be armed
with experience and the drive to go the next level which
can take a team a long way.
