CALIFORNIA SANTA
BARBARA gauchos (35-21, 14-10)
final 2008 ranking: NR
UCSB features a pair of returning starters in Mike Ford
(6-4, 2.96) and Mario Hollands (7-3, 4.03) that could
give the Gauchos the edge they need to position themselves
as the team to beat in the übercompetive Big West
Conference. The Guacho’s win total jumped a dozen
games in 2008 and could increase once again if a pair
of new pitchers in freshman Chris Joyce and community
college transfer Joe Gardner live up to expectations.
The UCSB offense returns a number of quality bats including
Shane Carlson (.349, 6, 53), Brian Gump (.318, 4, 36)
and senior Eric Oliver (.315, 5, 35) who is also pretty
handy with the mitt at first base. The Gauchos played
one of the toughest schedules last season which should
help them as they look to make a move up in the standings.
