CALIFORNIA IRVINE anteaters
(42-18, 14-10)
final 2008 ranking: #13

UCI has won 89 games over the past two seasons, but that total was a single game short of allowing the ‘Eaters to return to the College World Series for a second straight season. Irvine has proved that they are a team to be with reckoned and should once again figure into the national title race. Scott Gorgen is no longer in school, but the rest of the pitching staff which had a 3.27 team ERA (good for third in the nation) and 503 strikeouts in 538 innings pitched last season remains. Expect to see Eric Pettis (2.62, 17 SVs) and Daniel Bibona (9-3, 3.08) earn All American honors on the hill while senior Ben Orloff (.344, 0, 23) returns to lead a small ball offense that keeps defenses on their toes from the first pitch to the bottom of the ninth.
