ALL PING!BASEBALL 2007 PRESEASON

SECOND TEAM
There isn’t a single player on the Second Team who couldn’t
be argued as a First Team candidate - it is likely that more
than a few will be on the final post season squad. Second
Team third basemen Conor Gillaspie of Wichita State and Ian
Hollick of New Mexico have both continued to impress and could
be household names come May. Highly touted Tennessee outfielder
Julio Borbon will be sidelined for the beginning of the season
due to an ankle injury, but should be back and chasing pitchers
late March. Shortstop Brian Friday joins First Team selections
Savery and St. Clair as Rice Owls deserving of an All-Ping!
nod. Several players from smaller schools will likely rewrite
their university’s record book with impact seasons.
Catcher Tom Hill of Albany, Marcus Davis from Alcorn State,
Ryan Gotcher of Arkansas Little Rock and Josh Dew from Troy
could lead their teams to Omaha. Military men Milan Dinga
of Army and Navy’s Mitch Harris are multi-talented players
who are the pride of their country as well as their teams.
Second Team pitchers include flamethrowers Christian
Friedrich of Eastern Kentucky, Alex Wilson of Winthrop and
Ryan Reid of James Madison. Nebraska’s Tony Watson and
James Simmons of UC Riverside use poise and control to get
their outs. Andrew Carnigan from North Carolina hopes to be
on the mound, recording the final out in the CWS in 2007 after
being edged out by Oregon State last year. If he isn’t
there, don’t be surprised to see Josh Fields of Georgia
or Florida State’s Luke Tucker closing the final game.
