2009 All Ping! FRESHMAN Teams

Rice was a series win away from returning to Omaha, falling just short when they were elminiated by LSU in the Super Regionals. Had the Owls not had Anthony Rendon manning the hot corner, they may not have made it that far. The freshman phenom batted .388 with 20 homeruns and 72 RBI and was a finalist for both the Dick Howser Trophy and the Golden Spikes Award. For his on the field accomplishments he was named Conference USA Player of the Year, the first time in history the honor was bestowed on a freshman. His host of accolades have also earned him the Ping!Baseball Freshman Player of the Year designation.

The choice for the 2009 Ping!Baseball Freshman Pitcher of the Year can be seen this Saturday starting the first game of the College World Series. Cal State Fullerton's Noe Ramirez will throw the first pitch of the 63rd CWS when the Titans take to the field against Arkansas. This season the young right-hander is 9-1 with a dainty 2.86 ERA in 107 innings. He'll likely pass the century mark in strikeouts against the Hogs as he has 96 going into the series while issuing only 21 walks and allowing 85 hits. He edged out LSU closer Matty Ott by the slimmest of margins. The freshman Tiger has saved 14 games for the top ranked Tigers with a 2.27 ERA. Ott has struck out an astounding 61 batters in 43.2 innings to help the Bayou Bengals return to Omaha one again.

Also strongly considered was Virginia's Danny Hultzen who starred not just on the mound, but at the dish as well. As pitcher Hultzen went 9-1 for the determined Cavaliers, leading the team in wins and ERA. He tossed 86 innings, striking out 95 batters with only 27 walks in 14 starts. At the plate he batted .333 with three homeruns and 33 RBI in 186 at bats. He was also a perfect eight for eight in stolen base attempts.
