Two current members of the IUP Baseball team, Robbie Zinsmeister and Stephen Cooke, were selected as collegiate summer league all-stars this past week.
Zinsmeister of the Quakertown Blazers in the Atlantic Collegiate Baseball League was selected as the shortstop for the west squad. The ACBL all-star game will be played Monday, July 12, on the campus of St. John’s University in New York. Zinsmester is hitting .300 and leads his team in runs, hits, triples, stolen bases, and RBI’s.
Cooke pitches for the Winchester Royals of the Virginia Valley Baseball League. Selected as an all-star for the north squad, Cooke has made 12 appearances on the mound and posted a 4-1 record. The Valley League all-star game is Sunday, July 11, at James Madison University in Harrisonburg, VA. Cooke was a PSAC 1st team closer for IUP this past season.
In professional baseball, IUP alum Paul Bingham is currently hitting .375 for the San Diego Padres Arizona Rooke League team. He leads his team and is sixth overall in the league in batting average. He was drafted by the Padres in the 20th round of the Major League Baseball Draft this past June after completing a record setting four year career at IUP and was named PSAC Player of the Year and 1st Team All-American.
