Spotlight Player of the Week
Tony Campana
University of Cincinnati

Cincinnati centerfielder Tony Campana’s just a little guy. But his role as leadoff hitter and spark plug for the Bearcats has been immeasurable thus far in 2007. The transfer from North Carolina-Asheville has ignited an early season turnaround as the red and black have won 10 of 12 after a rough 1-5 start.

As a Bulldog in Asheville, Campana put together a promising freshman campaign with a .321 batting average and 13 stolen bases while establishing an impressive Big South conference record by notching a base hit in all 24 conference games. In his year-plus at UNC-Asheville, Campana hit at a .319 clip with 22 stolen bases in 71 games.

But somewhere between North Carolina and Ohio, Campana was given the green light to run the bases at will. Already, Campana has surpassed his career stolen base total by tallying 28 swipes (32 attempts) in 17 games as a Bearcat. (Yes, you read that right.) This past weekend alone Campana stole eight bases against Chicago State.

With just eight more stolen bases (which could happen by the time you’re done reading this profile), Campana will break the 16 year-old single-season stolen base mark for the Bearcats. Four times this season, Campana has stolen three or more bases in a game, including an unheard of six! against North Carolina A&T in the second game of a doubleheader on February 24. (The NCAA Division I single-season record for stolen bases in a season is 107 by Texas Pan-American’s Don Guillot in 1987. Campana is on pace for 92.)

After going just three for his first 18 at the plate, Campana has 22 hits in 52 at-bats (.423 batting average) and has hit in 13 straight games since an 0-for-5 performance at Austin Peay on February 18. Campana has just one extra-base hit in 70 at-bats thus far, but who needs power when you can run your way to a double (or triple)?
