Players of the Week Matt Hague & Curt
Rindal Washington huskies
With victories over St. John’s, UC Irvine, Arizona State,
UCLA, UC Riverside and a recent series win over reigning national
champion Oregon State, the Washington Huskies (26-23, 9-9)
are quietly continuing to build one of the most dominant college
ball clubs in West. Only once in the past eleven years (and
only twice in seventeen) has Washington finished below .500.
This year Washington played its first game ever at Safeco
Field, beating top ten Oregon State, 9-6 in front of a crowd
of 10,421; the largest-ever attendance for a conference game
in Pac-10 history. When 2006 Golden Spikes Award winner, Tim
Lincecum left Seattle for professional baseball at the end
of last season, Washington coach Ken Knutson still had plenty
of talent suiting up in the Purple and Gold. Continuing to
leading the Husky charge this year are a pair Washington state
natives, Matt Hague and Curt Rindal.
In his previous two seasons Hague compiled a .394 batting
average, the highest career average in school history. He
has also earned accolades as a first-team All-Pac-10 selection
and preseason third-team All-America and All-Ping! honors
this year. This season Hague has made the transition from
the outfield to third base without missing a beat offensively.
He has boasted a 19-game hitting streak (ended last Saturday,
May 12th) and is hitting .344 with 10 homeruns, 13 doubles,
1 triple and 40 RBIs.
Rindal’s
stats for 2007 are nearly identical to Hauge’s. He is
hitting the ball at a .345 clip with 9 homeruns and 45 RBI.
Amongst his hits are 19 doubles to lead the team and one triple.
Last year, the first baseman Rindal earned first-team All-Pac-10
honors as well and ranked among the Pac-10 leaders in several
offensive categories: fourth in doubles (21), fourth in total
bases (135), seventh in home runs (10), eighth in slugging
(.577), ninth in hits (82) and 10th in batting (.350).
With upcoming series against conference foes Arizona and
Cal to end the regular season, Hague and Rindal will need
to continue their offensive exploits to push the Huskies into
the post season and gain a regional bid. With a history of
production and honors already behind them, the determined
duo should keep Washington in contention until the very last
out.
