Player of the Week
Brendon Hitchcock
Binghamton University |
Over the past three years, Binghamton University senior Brendon
Hitchcock has led the Bearcats to some of their most successful
seasons to date at the Division I level, and his torrid hitting
and BU’s success have continued into 2007. This year
the first baseman from the small town of Laceyville, PA has
continuing his torrid hitting, batting .530 with only 5 strikeouts
in 78 at bats, to guide the Bearcats to a 6-1 America East
record and 12-10 overall effort. As a sophomore, his .399
batting average led the America East Conference and ranked
32nd nationally and was the lone underclassmen selected to
the ESPN The Magazine/CoSIDA Academic All-District I first
and finished among the America East Conference leaders in
virtually every major offensive category. Last year, Hitchcock
was again named first team all-American East, leading the
team and ranked fifth in the conference with a .363 batting
average and his slugging percentage of .560 was tops on the
team and sixth-best in the AEC. Once his Bearcat career concludes,
Hitchcock’s name will be on top of many of BU’s
offensive record lists. Nonetheless, when it comes to records,
Hitchcock isn’t just setting them; he audits and can
record them as well. The three-time conference all-star and
team leader (2x MVP) is also a Dean's List accounting major
(3.56 GPA) and has singing and theatre talents as well.
Academically,
Hitchcock has found himself on Dean’s Lists as much
as on All-Star squads. Iin a national competition in New York
City, Hitchcock was one of a quintet of Binghamton School
of Management students who finished second overall in the
Price-Waterhouse Cooper’s extreme accounting (xAct)
competition. The event was orchestrated by one of the nation’s
largest and most renowned accounting firms and pitted Hitchcock
and his schoolmates against some of the country's most premier
programs
Musically, Hitchcock finds himself as comfortable on stage
singing a solo as he is on the field in a batter’s box.
Before coming to BU, he performed with a local community theater,
holding lead roles in productions such as The Music Man and
Damn Yankees. He also joined a traveling quartet which sang
at nearby churches and community events. Once at Binghamton,
he would commonly perform for 400-500 people singing the national
anthem, captivating audiences with his voice. He has sang
for crowds in the thousands and appeared on TV singing in
regional telecasts.
“I enjoy performing, period,” Hitchcock has stated.
“Whether it’s on the athletic field or the stage,
it brings enjoyment to people and that’s what draws
me to it.”
