Spotlight Player of the Week
Kraig Binick
New York Institute of Technolgy

After receiving DI Independent Baseball Second Team honors the last two years, it is highly doubtful that NYIT senior outfielder Kraig Binick will be playing second fiddle to anyone in ‘07 if he continues his torrid pace. So far this season Binick is batting a staggering .451 with a handsome .746 slugging percentage for the Bears. Of his 32 hits to date this year, 12 of them have been for extra bases, including three homeruns and three triples. He’s also a terror on the basepaths as well, the swift Binick is a perfect 11 for 11 in stolen base attempts and has only grounded into one double play.

On April 4th of last week Binick earned a slew of awards and accolades for his part in NYIT’s resurgence and five game winning streak after the Bears dropped their first tena games of the season. Binick extended his season-long hitting streak to eight games, batted .577 (15-26), had five multi-hit games, nine runs scored, six doubles, six RBI and was 6-6 on stolen bases attempts. He was awarded the Division I Independent Baseball Player of the Week, Gotham Baseball Magazine Honor Roll and College Baseball Foundation National Honor Roll honors.

Last season Binick finished second on the Bears with a .354 batting average, 42 runs scored, 57 hits, and nine doubles despite missing nine games. He led the club with 25 stolen bases, including four swipes in one game. He ranked fourth in the nation in the toughest to strike out category (just behind teammate Mike Kenefick who had only 5 K’s in 133 ABs), fanning only seven times in 164 at bats for an average of a strikeout once every 23.4 at bats.

In his sophomore campaign, he was the only Bear to play in all 46 games, starting 45 of them. Binick finished second on the team batting .358 with 64 hits, and 35 runs scored, and his 31 stolen bases paced NYIT and was the ninth highest rate in the nation.

As a freshman in ’04, Binick made an immediate impact for the Bears, leading NYIT with 26 stolen bases and 40 runs scored. He finished second on the team with 64 hits, 33 RBI and a .332 batting average. His 6 for 12 with five runs scored and four RBI performance in the first two games of the Division Independent Invitational Tournament earned him First Team All-Independent honors.
