PING!BASEBALL SPOTLIGHT PLAYER
Asher Wojciechowski
The Citadel Bulldogs

As difficult as his name is to spell, The Citadel pitcher Asher Wojciechowski has even more difficult to hit off of this season. Since his debut appearance on the diamond, when he struck out nine batters without allowing a single run and only gave up two hits in six innings against Delaware, the freshman hurler has been nothing short of spectacular this season. Not only is the righty ranked atop the Southern Conference leaders in several categories including innings, ERA, strikeouts and opposing batting average, “Wojo” is currently ranked 16th in the nation in strikeouts (54) and is positioned 22nd in the country in hits allowed per nine innings (5.78).

So far this season the Beaufort, S.C., native is 4-0 with a Bulldog leading (third in the Southern Conference) 2.89 ERA. In eight appearances he’s complied 46.2 innings while only allowing an ungenerous 30 hits, resulting in a .181 opposition batting average which is thirty points lower than anyone else in the conference. He’s also accumulated 54 strikeouts, reaching double-digits and a personal high of 10 in his last start against the Wofford Terriers, who won the Southern Conference Tournament last season. In his only relief appearance of the year, Wojciechowski struck out the side in an inning of relief against the Wright State Raiders. He’s also shown remarkable composure for a first year pitcher. In front of 2,500+ fans against SoCon leading College of Charleston, Wojo tossed six innings of three hit baseball with nine strikeouts in a 13-1 win over the Cougars to earn his second collegiate victory.

Understandably, Bulldog Coach Fred Jordan is keyed up on Wojciechowski and anticipates bigger and better things from him as the season, and his career in Charleston.

“Asher has gotten off to a very good start this season.” Jordan stated, “Hopefully he can continue to locate his fastball and slider and increase the consistency of his change-up as the year progresses. He has impressed us with his even-keel demeanor and competitiveness to this date. We feel he can develop into an outstanding college pitcher over the next couple of years.”

Wojciechowski’s breakout performance has helped make the Bulldog pitching staff one of the top staffs in the Southern Conference. The Citadel pitchers lead the Southern Conference with a 3.09 ERA and rank in the top half of the SoCon in several other pitching categories. Wojo and The Citadel returns home after a five-game road swing to host Davidson in a three-game conference series this weekend.
